Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
