Seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
