The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
